The Autoimmune Wellness Handbook Interview & Giveaway – in Australia!

The Autoimmune Wellness Handbook in Australia

Before we dive into the delightful video interview I had with Mickey and Angie below, let me start by saying you do not even need to have an autoimmune disease to benefit from this book.

I feel that anyone wanting to increase their energy, cognitive function, digestion and overall wellbeing would easily find enough nuggets of wisdom within these pages to help take their health to the next level.

There was a time in my life when my health had declined to a state I did not know whether I would be able to recover from. Thanks to the perfect cocktail of growing up on the modern Standard American Diet, laden with all it’s processed and over commercialized junk food, along with equally unhealthful teen media body image messages, all compounded with a lack of adequate tools to express and understand my emotions, it is no wonder I was not well.

When things took a turn for the worse and doctors were left scratching their heads in confusion about what exactly was going on, I embarked on a journey through the medical system, spending all my time and money trying to figure out how to feel well again.

The resources available for navigating complicated health crises (especially through natural means) were close to non-existent back then (do you even remember a time before Dr Google!?). And after exhausting my available options, spending thousands of dollars on specialists and treatments in the process, my health was still declining, and I was left feeling defeated and frustrated.

This is where my journey to discovering the most helpful and best qualified specialist began.
That ‘specialist’ was myself.

Through much study, research and many months of self-experimentation, I came to live what could now be referred to as a ‘paleo’ lifestyle, focusing heavily on nutrient dense wholefoods, functional movement, and mindfulness.

This was back before there were any good books on the topic, nor any blogs at all. And although my health was improving, I craved some understanding and community (when the majority of people in my life thought I’d gone off my rocker!)

Little did I know that more than a decade later, terms like ‘paleo’, ‘functional medicine’ and ‘functional fitness’ would not only become widely available, but even become trendy.

With this knowledge, my health and vitality drastically improved, symptoms became more manageable, life became more stable and I became a different person emotionally and physically.

I can confidently say now that my health is the best it has ever been.
Although let me be clear that I am not saying it’s perfect, no one is, nor should you strive to be. I’m all about finding acceptance with what is YOUR personal potential, in any given moment.

And while I drew on various mindset and lifestyle practices, along with a healing diet to bring my body back into balance, when the ’Autoimmune Protocol’, as we now know it, gained popularity around 5 years ago, it made it a heck of a lot easier for me to demonstrate my way of living to others. Prior to then, when I would tell people that I followed a gluten free, grain free, egg free, dairy free, sugar free, nut free, soy free, wholefood diet, they’d just tilt their head sideways and ask what the heck that meant. (and fair enough :) )

These days, the amount of AIP resources available is absolutely fantastic. And within this umbrella term, people all over the world formed a virtual community, collaborating and sharing their experiences of living well with chronic health conditions, including these two very AIP-savvy ladies I am speaking with today.

Allow me to introduce to you: The Autoimmune Wellness Handbook by Mickey Trescott and Angie Alt.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Mickey and Angie, autoimmune wellness advocates, and founders of autoimmunewellness.com about their new guidebook. Not only is this a book full of delicious wholesome recipes, meal plans and all the diet related details you would want to know when embarking on a healing protocol, it also provides a comprehensive lifestyle guide, covering a vast array of practical topics for living well with autoimmunity.

Boy would this book have saved me years and dollars back when I needed some support! That’s not to say I’d change a thing about my journey, I am grateful for the challenges it presented me, because of what I now know and have the privilege of sharing with others. (In the interview, we talk about how these challenges affect our outlook and satisfaction in life).

So whether you’re just embarking on your autoimmune journey, or you’re looking for some AIP troubleshooting tips, or perhaps you’re looking for a wellness reboot, I think this is a book you’ll want to add to your library.

– Tips for navigating health challenges with a partner/spouse.
– Is a low-carb/ketogenic lifestyle a good fit for someone with autoimmune disease?

Grabbing a cuppa and watching the interview right now! I’m already a subscriber to your lovely emails and I would like to win this book because it sounds truly amazing. Thanks so much for including Australia in a giveaway, soooo exciting!

Hi Emily…my story is very similar to yours. My husband is the one that actually diagnosed my autoimmune condition, hidradenitis suppurative, not a Doctor! Since then the hospital has passed me from Plastics to now Dermatology where I know I am only going to be prescribed heavy medication. Surgery is my only other option.
This disease will never go away but I know I am allergic to something and there must be a way to lessen the painful, embarrassing and debilitating symptoms. I would love to try an autoimmune diet and be a part of your community. Thanks Tracey :)

I struggle with some aspects of AIP basically because i have severe RA in wrists so can’t cut and even struggle with cooking -living alone it is a major problem . Always looking for something to help my journey.

I would like to win a copy so I can improve my health and pass on the information I will learn to my family and friends . I work with children and would like to be a better role model to them

I would like to win a copy to learn new things about healthy eating & living. Have been on this journey for the last 7 years, trying to figure out how to help my son. Kept being told he is in normal weight & height range, no noticable eczema etc. Basically go away. So have been researching & trying to fjnd my way. Have made lots of improvements, but I think there is always more to learn. Thank you for sharing your wisdom.

I’ve been looking forward to getting my hands on a copy of this book in what seems like forever! I’d love to win so I can read cover to cover many times over. I think the benefit of the added meal plans and lifestyle guides would really help me on my current AIP healing journey.

I would love to win this book so I can improve my AIP journey to managing my Crohn’s disease. I’m still on medication but have found going AIP has reduced the number of flares I have over the last two years. I’m still too scared to stop taking my meds but hope that with a book like this it may give me the tools and motivation to try.

Because after years and years I’m sick of being sick and I hope this can help!

I’d love win a copy of this book to give to my son who recently moved out and is living with 3 autoimmune disorders. I met Mickey when she came to Sydney and I have a signed copy of her cookbook

I’m so super excited right now for this giveaway. I have been looking into this book and I really wanted it because of my (Lupus) I actually asked for it for Christmas and never got it. Lol I know it would be a great start for me to a heather path. Can’t wait hopefully I win. Good luck to all.

Thanks for your recipes and community! I’d love to win this book, not for myself, but for my good ol mum! She really deserves a bit of tlc with her unruly body! X

I’ve recently discovered I have Hashimotos and from what I’ve read and heard, Mickey and Angie’s book would really benefit and assist me to getting on track with using AIP. It can be very overwhelming to get the ball rolling, understanding and knowing where to start. I would love a copy of this book. I am in Australia so thank you for thinking of us down here ?

I’m just starting my journey to heal my autoimmune disease. I would love a copy of this book. I need all the help I can get?

I would love to win this, I met Mickey Trescott when she came to NZ and she was so inspirational and no matter how hard this way of life gets I always go back to her book Autoimmune paleo so this would be a nice change.

My family need their Mum back. Im so damn tired and grumpy all the time. They deserve better. I would love this book to guide me in the right direction, something i can’t afford to buy right now. Thank you and keep up the great work you do.

I came to the land of AIP cooking when my gut was so impacted by traditional Paleoesque foods that I was at a complete loss, also suspected it could aid my CFS and inflammation (a left over side effect of pregnancy)…Since then I have become actively involved in a Facebook page that shares AIP recipes to our global healing community. People’s perceptions about such a restrictive diet are often voided when they sample the tasty meals that can be prepared. I would be so excited to have another wonderful AIP cookbook to wow them with my creations and continue this tasty healing journey. Great giveaway thanks for bringing it to Oz <3

I would love to get a copy of this book to help me on my journey. I haven’t been ‘officially’ diagnosed with anything but have a history of autoimmune issues such as asthma, RA and thyroid related conditions. This book would also help my partner understand the ‘why’ behind the way I eat and that I can’t just eat whatever I like anymore. Thank you for hosting this giveaway.

We have just signed up and would love to win a copy of this book. Both myself and my little girl have auto immobile issues and we are passionate about eating well to keep well as a family. We love resources and this book looks amazing!

I would love to win a copy of this book to help my daughter and family ❤

Oh man! So many food and chemical allergies and intolerances. Really need a heads up to conquer these and set myself up for health!

Oh man! With food allergies and intoleranes, I really need some guidance to get my health in order.

My health has improved so much following this protocol and I would love to have access to more fabulous recipes by winning this book!

I just got diagnosed with an Auto Immune disease- Hashimoto. There is so little information out there on how to make good meals that this would be really useful. I get tired and get rashes on my skin and it would help so much to know new ways of cooking.

I would like to win a copy because I have multiple severe and uncontrolled autoimmune diseases, including RA, lupus, AS, intermittent MS and more. All my body systems are effected. I spend a third of my life in hospital. I am on multiple infusions, pred and methotrexate. More then anything in the world I want to be healthy again. I know food is medicine I just need help putting my beliefs into practise.
My fingers are crossed to win this copy. Wishing everyone luck, it’s hard to pick just one person when so many of us are suffering. Sending out love. ❤

Hi, thank you so much for giving us this opportunity! Although I have had AF for probably over 20 years, along with more recently, leaky gut and mould toxicity, it was only diagnosed this year – at about the same time as things started escalating. I have been eating AIP for a few months but I’m really struggling at the moment as I have also started having histamine reactions.

Because I borrowed it from the library, it is brilliant…but I had to send it back!

Whilst battling my first auto immune disease flare after 13 years in remission, I’m discovering more about how I can take better care of myself holistically whilst on medical treatment, and think about making life changes for a longer term result. A handbook would be amazing to guide me through this journey!

My mum & I both have auto immune diseases so to win a copy of this book would help the both of us. We have listened to all (Mickey & Angie’s) podcasts & know how much this book has helped others so would be great to get our hands on a copy!

Hi, I have been following AIP for the past 18mths to help with four AI conditions. I would love to be in the running for a chance to receive a copy of this book. It will give me a chance to reset and make sure I’m on the right track.

I would really love some guidance on what I am fueling my body with and how it is helping or hindering my health. I need to embrace my autoimmune disease and begin participating in the process and understanding all my choices :)

I was diagnosed with Hashimotos 12 weeks into my pregnancy with my first child. I was started on Thyroxin, with the most important thing at the time being to make sure my TSH levels were correct to ensure the health of my baby. By little girl is now 11 weeks old and I have now turned the focus to me and my future health and have been researching how to manage my autoimmune condition. I have been listening to lots of podcasts with Mikey and Angie and have started implementing some of their recommendations. It would be wonderful to have a copy of their book to guide me.

I would really love to read this book it sounds amazing. I’m a teacher and after years of enduring a mouldy classroom I have ended up with 3 AI diseases and terrible immune problems. Would love to see what wisdom they have to help me. Thank you.

I would love to win the book, sick of feeling sick & having a non existent relationship with food so need some good food motivation & guidance to live allot better with autoimmune disease ?

Hey! I’m a massive fan of Mickey and Angie – they, their website and their podcast have helped me more than I can explain!! Planning on kicking the refractory coeliacs (errghh!) and graves diagnoses to the kurb! I’m a genetics researcher, so spend most of my time trying to decode other peoples health concerns, but really looking forward to make some progress on mine soon :) P.S looking forward to getting some tips and tricks from your blog/newsletters xx

Sluggish and tired,
I’m losing the plot.
Slowly turning into something I don’t want.
I want something to get me back on the wagon.
A copy from Mickey will help slay
My Hashi dragon!

I’m generally pretty terrible at keeping up with blogs etc when there is so much information out there to keep up with. That’s where books come in.
That aside, having a book like this handy would be something to show my close friends and family.
I’m in my mid thirties, engaged in music and arts events and community events, and have been struggling with pain for years. As much as my friends try to understand where I am coming from, it would be incredibly helpful to be able to not only refer to this book, but also share with those close to me to help them gain some insight.

I would like to try AIP diet as Paleo is not working for me. I have a Leaky Gut, Candida and suffer from re-occurring UTIs, not to mention Menopause and all its not so great side effects. I need the guidance in the foods I can eat with all these different things going on as Iam getting very confused and I find very conflicting information out there. This book I know will help me and thanks for a great web page, so glad I came across it xx

Thanks for the post and the opportunity Emily! I’m trying to broaden my repertoire of meals – to get a greater range of nutrients as much as flavour – and this book looks like it would help LOTS!

Hi Emily, just love Mickey & Angie, both ladies are inspirational. Need to hear stories of people overcoming their autoimmune issues. Its such a long & difficult journey & regular inspiration is always a boost .

I was browsing our local bookstore yesterday and came accords this beautiful book. I am so keen to learn more about other Autoimmune health and lifestyle tips. This would truly be so magical to win. Being a Type 1 Diabetic who’s always keen to learn as much as I can, I think this book would be so valuable!

I am just beginning my journey and commitment to better health and energy. This book has popped up so many times during my searches online! I would absolutely love a copy. Regards, Caroline.

With three auto immune diagnoses and heading for a fourth….this book could be the answer I am looking for.

My 5 Autoimmune diagnoses have helped me look at life differently. In the beginning they owned and controlled me. One day I decided that I had to take control and I started to believe that “It really was all about me”. I started looking after myself and I began my healing journey. For a while the Internet became my lifeline. I devoured every bit of information I could. I am following AIP with some re-introductions and all of my Specialists and GP are very happy with my progress and my attitude. I am very proud of myself. I am my own Gatekeeper. I would love a copy of this book.

I’m new to the AIP way of life. I have Hashimoto’s disease, and had thyroid cancer. The medication hasn’t done me any favours, with the last change of dose adding 6-8kilos. I need help and structure, or I’m going for the salty or sweet treats every chance.

I have a bunch of healthy cooking books, with lots of bookmarks. But AIP is new to me. And I think it’s what I need, and I got the nod of approval when I mentioned it to my dietitian.

Recovering from Colorectal Cancer and now have been told I have an Autoimmune condition. As nutrition is the foundation of healing I am looking for help and guidance so that I can be the best I can be.

Oooohhhh la laaaaaa. I actually really dislike reading online so I don’t really take much info in. I’d love to have a hard copy of something AIP related. I might actually learn something…..and after 2 years I need some new recipes that won’t get lost in my screenshots ? lol

I’m right at the start of this healing journey and need all the help I can get. I’ve had hashimotos for 14 years and whilst I think I cope pretty well I think I’ve just adapted to a new sort of normal. It’s time to get some energy and zest for life back. My forties are going to be fabulous!

I know there are recipes on line but it doesnt do it for me. I love the feel of turning a page, I love the smell of a book! Ohh nearly forgot the diseases, the arthritis the vasculitis, the Dupuytrens, the frozen shoulder, the chrones, I could go on. Our family needs this thanks for helping the 3 generations x

I would love a copy of this great book to help my two daughters and myself recover from Graves
A struggle I have been fighting for 10 years and my daughters 4 years. Every little ( or big!) thing helps on the journey to health

I went through premature menopause at age 37, reason unknown but later thought to be autoimmune related. The last 12 months I have been struggling with gut related issues that none of my doctors can resolve. I am in pain constantly and at my lowest point. I feel that my last resort is to try AIP and am looking for all the help I can get. Thanking you in advance…hopefully!!

I’ve just started my paleo journey, diagnosed with Thyroid cancer earlier this year resulting in a full thyrodectomy, I’m still suffering with hypothyroid symptoms with ‘normal’ blood test results. Mickey Tresscott’s name has popped up in all my research, I’m sure this diet/lifestyle change will bring longterm benefits!!

Really enjoyed the interview, thank you so much lovely! I am a huge fan of Mickey’s, and I’ve got one of her other books. I have had my eye on this one for quite some time now, but unfortunately due to ongoing autoimmune issues, I’ve had to take another 6 months off work meaning I can’t afford a lot of things that would help with my health – oh the irony! I had a flick through the book at my local bookstore and it looks so perfect. I’m a very visual person and like writing things down, planning, writing lists etc so this book is laid out in a way that speaks my language! Thank you for this opportunity xx

Thanks for the opportunity in this competition!
I would love to win this book so that my family and I can eat predominantly the same meals. I failed miserably at GAPS as I wasn’t looking long term enough. This book looks like it has what I need to take that future into account.
Thanks again.

After living with Crohn’s disease for 19 years, fourteen months ago I was struck with immeasurable pain and unable to move and am still waiting on a diagnosis for suspected fibromyalgia. It took me twelve months to get my head around AIP, with two steps forward and one step back the entire time, I’m proud to say that yesterday I hit the half-way mark (60 days) and I haven’t felt this good in a VERY long time! As a single mum and solopreneur, I would love any and all the advice I can get on how to manage my conditions and would very much love to win a copy of your book!

This book sounds awesome. I loved Mickey’s first cookbook (food that I actually would want to eat!!), and I’m an old school gal – I prefer a proper book, rather than reading online. I also have people in my life who need to be exposed to this information. Giving them a book to read would be super helpful.

I went to Mickey’s talk at Asana last year. Her comment that the aip diet isn’t restrictive at all – it helps her LIVE life has stuck with me. Whenever someone says to me paleo must be hard, I think of this. With my health now my life has only improved.

I would love to win this and have something to use as a guide as I have not long been diagnosed and need some help in getting accustomed ❤️❤️

I would be living a new life, if I could win this book. Just semi back in the real world after 2 years bed bound with POTS!
Sooo few few foods that I can eat. Would love some new ways to prepare and feast!
Miss delicious options.
Sick of lettuce, cucumber, avocado and tuna, 2 times a day!!!
Thanks fir this opportunity!
Feels like Christmas!
